The first job I had when I got to New York was a Customs House messenger. I found a cold water flat, $15 a month, on an old block right around the corner from the Customs House, before they tore that down and put a bank there. I was on the lowest part of Broad Street, right down on the waterfront, and I would get up, do the day thing, and the rest of the time just play, follow these other guys around, and study. I did that for a couple of years anyway.
