Well as long as I was playing the church music and improvising it wasn't considered jazz. Like I mean I was getting into John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and all these people, and I was putting that into the church. They didn't know I was really getting into that. All they knew was that as long as I could play the church melodies fine, whatever else I played, they didn't care. They didn't even know if it was jazz or not. They didn't care. But they knew that it was good. But they knew that when it came to playing that melody that I could play it strong. That was the point. So I got away with that I guess you could say. But that's where I learned to improvise, in the church. It's true.
