Yes. I was in grade school. I can tell you about this wonderful principal we had, Miss Milholland. It was a white school and all white teachers. She had a deep some- thing for black kids and black people. She was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I think she was about 6 feet something - she was very tall. If she discovered a talented black person she'd do everything in her power to help them. I think I was supposed to be in school - I was only in the third grade now. I was supposed to be in school at 9 o'clock. She'd give me until 9:30 or 10 to get in. She was booking me on gigs over at Tech University. She'd take me home with her and have me play for everybody in the place where she lived. She just was so beautiful. What really happened - I used to hide under the bed. I don't know if I told you about this and I think it's a terrible thing that anybody would indoctrinate a black kid against what happened to them when they were in slavery, what happened to their parents when they were in slavery, because it affected me so when I was quite young. I was in the third grade, I remember. I used to hide under the bed and listen to my great-grandparents talk about slaves and things. It infuriated me so that when I went to school I hit my teacher, Miss Itzel, with a stick. I just walked in school and hit her with a stick.
