This was overheard. You see, my great-grand- parents were born I guess about a year after the slaves were freed. They were both very fair, my grandmother especially. Mygrandfather had blonde hair. She used to tell how they used to put them out in the sun and try to parch them black because they were very, very fair and my grandmother is too. I'd hear them tell all these tales and about the slaves and what had happened. It really angered me and I can understand what's happened to the young black kids of today, because they really shouldn't - they should find out the history but they shouldn't hear too many things because they start thinking wrong.
