East 29th Street was the first and I moved up here in Harlem to 1667 Amsterdam. When I'd go to the Welfare Section where you get permits to sell clothing, Mr. Rosenberg would say - they'd laugh when I'd come through the door - "Well, Bel Canto, we were down to the store and you weren't there. " I said, "Business was bad and I took the clothes to Pittsburgh and sold them. " He'd laugh, "Ha, ha, ha! " They'd just laugh like mad. He said, "Never in my life have I heard of any kind of a transaction with stuff like you.. When somebody comes to the store you're supposed to be there, especially from this department. I'll tell you what you do, please, before we lose our jobs here. Will you please go down to () Street and get a permit to sell second-hand clothing? " They laughed at me and that's how they got rid of me because for a whole two years they would expect me to be in the store.
