Richard Habersham-Bey: To tell you the truth, I was never really involved in jazz until I got out to Michigan, because they were so much more into jazz in the Detroit area. I never knew too much about [jazz] until I got out there. We had a number of young fellas coming in from Detroit and when they told me about Charlie Parker, Miles Davis… They had a number of clubs in Detroit; I heard about Hastings Street in Detroit. They were much more into it than I was, these kids were into it and they thought I should be into it, coming out of New York. Everybody thought coming out of New York you had to know about what was going on in jazz.
