Sam Pinn: I would say yes. In growing up in that era, the vast majority of my contemporaries were basically into R&B. About 15-20% of us were jazz people. Back then when we went to parties everything was R&B that was the thing. It was both in a sense that you could appreciate both. In those days when you went to dances they would have bands playing, so you had a lot of major players playing in dance bands; that wasn’t necessarily R&B, but jazz – swing – to dance to.
