Harold Valle: Well the only thing I knew about Brooklyn was I would go to the Baby Grand [Brooklyn] on Fulton Street and Nostrand. I didn't know too much about Brooklyn so I would double back and go into Manhattan and go uptown; that was what I was familiar with, go to Smalls and there was a club called Connie's, and they would have jam sessions up there. And of course Birdland. In Brooklyn, with the group that I was more or less hanging with, they weren't into jazz so i was sort of on my own when it came to [jazz].
