Well, Basie, see he knew how to select guys that would fit together. And then after he'd get the guys he'd talk to them. He'd say "look, this is what I want...this is the way I want you to sound. " He said "you know to sound like Basie you have to play this way. " And he'd tell them what he'd want. And somebody would come and bring an arrangement, and he'd take the arrangement and listen to it. He'd say "all right now, I want to take that section out of the trumpet there, that eight bar, and leave that open for me. " And he'd say "now I want you to do this and I want you to use your hats in certain places, and your plungers, and the trumpets I want you to just shake the notes in certain place. " And then you'd say "okay. " And we'd get up and we'd do it. He said "now that sounds like Basie. " And we kept the thing going... [Pause]
