But what I try and tell bands is the people that are reading The Rag don't know you. They're going to judge your band based on what they hear on this recording. And if you're singing off-key or if there's something wrong with the vocal or if somebody is really hitting at least some clams on it, they aren't going to forgive you for that. They're going to resent paying money for that recording. But it's really dicey. Sometimes we'll run a review and sometimes I will get stuck with writing the review. And I've had some musicians who say to me "you're right, we knew when we did this recording that it wasn't up to our standard. " But they tried to slide it in. Other musicians get angry. And so you can't really predict what you're going to get. And I always make it clear that the reviews are subjective. I try and assign the review to somebody who already likes that genre of music and is knowledgeable. I'm not going to give a Ragtime record to somebody who only likes big bands. I try and find somebody who's knowledgeable, but sometimes I get reviews back and I think oh my God, am I going to run this?
