My first job was when I was about thirteen years old. I had been playing, you know, like little high school and junior high school gigs and one of the people that I had met through my uncle was working at the Howard Theater and he needed someone to replace him. For some reason or another everybody was busy, and so he knew my parents and he came over and he said "look, I'll be personally responsible for your son. I'll make sure, I know he's very young but I'm really in a desperate condition and I'd just like for him to cover for me for the early part of the evening. And I'll bring him home and everything will be alright, but, you know I'll take care of him. I'll make sure he's alright. " And so that was my first job with older musicians, professional musicians.
