I want to ask you something about playing the bass and playing slowly. Because a string bass, unlike amplified bass guitar, you only have your physical enunciation of the string.  And obviously no matter how hard you hit it there's a certain amount of decay in between notes. But it's the sustain of the notes that drives it. So that has to be a lot of your particular technique to keep a band so instead of playing notes -- thud-thud-thud, you play a phrase -- ka-toom-toom-toom.
